Anxiety Disorder Due to Another Medical Condition

Anxiety disorder due to another medical condition is a diagnosis used when anxiety symptoms are a direct result of a medical illness or condition, rather than a primary mental health disorder. This diagnosis is made when there’s a strong link between the medical condition and the anxiety, and the anxiety symptoms are not typical of a primary anxiety disorder.  (formerly Hypochondriasis)

Medical condition can manifest physically and psychologically. Physical symptoms may include heart palpitations, sweating, dizziness, or difficulty breathing, while psychological symptoms can include feelings of impending doom, restlessness, and trouble concentrating. It’s crucial to distinguish between anxiety caused by a medical condition and other anxiety disorders, as the underlying cause and treatment approaches differ.

Physical Symptoms:

• Heart palpitations: A rapid, pounding, or fluttering heart.

• Sweating: Excessive perspiration, especially in the palms and feet.

• Dizziness: Feeling lightheaded or faint.

• Difficulty breathing: Shortness of breath or feeling like you can’t catch your breath.

• Nausea or stomach upset: Feeling sick to your stomach or experiencing digestive discomfort.

• Trembling or shaking: Involuntary muscle tremors.

• Muscle tension: Stiffness or pain in the muscles.

• Chest pain or discomfort: A sensation of tightness or pressure in the chest.

Psychological Symptoms:

• Feelings of impending doom: An overwhelming sense of dread or disaster.

• Restlessness or inability to relax: Feeling agitated or unable to sit still.

• Trouble concentrating or focusing: Difficulty thinking clearly or maintaining attention.

• Excessive worrying or fear: Anxiety that is disproportionate to the situation.

• Irritability or emotional outbursts: Easily becoming agitated or frustrated.
