Unspecified Intellectual Disability (ID)

This is a diagnostic term used when a person over the age of five is suspected to have an intellectual disability, but a definitive diagnosis cannot be made due to difficulties in assessment, often because of sensory or physical impairments, severe behavioral issues, or co-occurring mental health conditions. This diagnosis is used when standardized testing is not possible or reliable due to these limitations.

Delayed milestones: Sitting, walking, talking later than usual

Thinking problems: Trouble solving problems, understanding consequences, or learning new things

Speech and language issues: Hard to express thoughts or understand others

Daily life challenges: Difficulty with dressing, eating, or using the bathroom

Social struggles: Trouble making friends or adjusting to changes

School difficulties: Problems with reading, writing, math, and keeping up

Other signs: May have seizures, vision/hearing issues, ADHD, or mood problems
