These are a group of mental health conditions that develop following exposure to a traumatic or stressful event. These disorders are characterized by a range of symptoms, including re-experiencing the traumatic event, avoidance of reminders, negative alterations in mood and cognition, and heightened arousal. Examples of these disorders include Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Acute Stress Disorder, and Adjustment Disorders.
1. Intrusion Symptoms
Unwanted memories and nightmares about the trauma
Flashbacks, feeling like the trauma is happening again
Strong emotional or physical distress when reminded of the event
2. Avoidance Symptoms
Avoiding thoughts or feelings related to the trauma
Avoiding people, places, or activities that serve as reminders
3. Negative Changes in Mood and Thinking
Ongoing negative emotions (fear, guilt, anger, shame)
Blaming self or others, or distorted views of the trauma
Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed
Feeling detached or emotionally distant from others
Inability to feel positive emotions like joy or love
4. Arousal and Reactivity Symptoms
Irritability, angry outbursts, or aggression
Reckless behavior, including substance use or dangerous activities
Hypervigilance and always feeling “on edge”
Exaggerated startle response
Difficulty sleeping or concentrating
5. Symptoms in Children
Young children: Bedwetting, regression (e.g., forgetting how to talk), reenacting trauma in play
Older children/teens: Similar symptoms to adults, plus disruptive or aggressive behavior
