This is a mental disorder characterized variously by hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thinking and behavior, and flat or inappropriate affect. Symptoms develop gradually and typically begin during young adulthood and rarely resolve.
Schizophrenia symptoms can be categorized into three main groups: positive, negative, and disorganized symptoms. Positive symptoms include hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that aren’t there) and delusions (false, fixed beliefs). Negative symptoms involve a decrease in normal functions, like reduced emotional expression or motivation. Disorganized symptoms include confused thinking and speech, as well as unusual or bizarre behavior.
