Autism, also known as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects brain development. There is no one type of autism or one particular way it appears in children, but generally involve challenges in social interaction and communication, as well as restricted and repetitive behaviors or interests. These can manifest in various ways, including difficulties with eye contact, understanding nonverbal cues, expressing emotions, and forming social connections. Additionally, individuals with ASD may exhibit repetitive behaviors, sensory sensitivities, and intense focused interests.
Social Communication and Interaction:
Difficulty with social interaction: May struggle to initiate or maintain conversations, understand social cues, or share interests with others.
Reduced eye contact and facial expressions: May avoid eye contact or have difficulty expressing emotions through facial expressions.
Challenges with nonverbal communication: May struggle to understand or use nonverbal cues like gestures or body language.
Delayed or unusual language development: May have delays in language acquisition, use repetitive speech, or have difficulty understanding spoken language.
Restricted and Repetitive Behaviors, Interests, or Activities:
Repetitive movements or actions: May engage in repetitive movements like hand flapping, rocking, or spinning.
Insistence on sameness and routines: May become distressed by changes in routines or environment.
Intense focused interests: May have intense interests in specific topics or objects, and may struggle to shift focus to other things.
Sensory sensitivities: May be overly sensitive or under-sensitive to sensory input like sounds, lights, or textures.
Other Characteristics:
Delayed cognitive or learning skills: May experience delays in cognitive or learning skills, but this is not always the case.
Unusual eating and sleeping habits: May have unusual eating or sleeping patterns.
Gastrointestinal issues: May experience gastrointestinal issues.
Hyperactivity, impulsivity, or inattentiveness: May exhibit hyperactive, impulsive, or inattentive behaviors.
Anxiety, stress, or excessive worry: May experience anxiety, stress, or excessive worry.
Lack of fear or excessive fear: May have an atypical reaction to fear, either a lack of fear or an excessive amount.
Difficulty with coordination: May experience difficulty with coordination or fine motor skills.
