A rare impulse control disorder characterized by the deliberate and repeated setting of fires for the purpose of relieving tension or experiencing pleasure. It is not driven by financial gain, anger, vengeance, or a desire to conceal criminal activity. Individuals with pyromania exhibit a fascination with fire and its related paraphernalia, experiencing arousal or tension before setting a fire and relief or pleasure afterward.
Fascination with fire:
Individuals with pyromania exhibit a persistent and intense interest in fire, often including fire-related paraphernalia like lighters, matches, and fire-fighting equipment.
Recurrent fire setting:
Setting fires is a deliberate and repetitive behavior, not a one-time event. These acts are not driven by any external motivators like monetary gain, revenge, or political statements.
Tension or arousal before fire setting:
Individuals experience a build-up of tension or a sense of excitement prior to starting a fire.
Pleasure and relief after fire setting:
Setting fires provides a sense of pleasure, relief, or gratification, either during the act, witnessing the fire, or participating in its aftermath.
