Excoriation (Skin-Picking) Disorder

More commonly known as dermatillomania, is a mental disorder on the obsessive–compulsive spectrum that is characterized by the repeated urge or impulse to pick at one’s own skin, to the extent that either psychological or physical damage is caused.

Repetitive skin picking: This can involve fingernails, fingertips, or even tools like tweezers.

Skin damage: Picking can cause lesions, open wounds, scabs, and scarring.

Difficulty stopping: Despite attempts to reduce or stop, individuals struggle to control the behavior.

Psychological distress: Skin picking can cause significant anxiety, shame, embarrassment, and social isolation.

Impairment: The disorder can interfere with work, social life, and daily activities.

Rituals: Some individuals may examine, play with, or even ingest the picked skin.
