This disorder is a condition where anxiety or panic symptoms arise directly from the use, misuse, or withdrawal from substances like drugs, alcohol, or medications. It’s characterized by intense worry, nervousness, or panic that is not better explained by an independent anxiety disorder. The symptoms typically resolve once the substance is out of the system or the withdrawal period ends.
Symptoms mirror those of general anxiety but are triggered by a substance:
Physical Symptoms
Racing heart, palpitations
Shortness of breath, chest tightness
Sweating, trembling, or shaking
Dizziness, lightheadedness
Nausea, upset stomach
Muscle tension or restlessness
Psychological Symptoms
Excessive worry or fear
Panic attacks (sudden intense fear with physical symptoms)
Feeling on edge or constantly alert
Irritability, difficulty concentrating
Fear of losing control, going crazy, or dying (especially during panic episodes)
